The July 14, 2011 issue of The New York Review of Books includes the second of a two-part review of several new books on the topic of psychiatry, including Unhinged. Review author Marcia Angel, Senior Lecturer in Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School and former Editor in Chief of The New England Journal of Medicine, calls Unhinged “absorbing” in her article “The Illusions of Psychiatry,” where she also explores Irving Kirsch’s The Emperor’s New Drugs, Robert Whitaker’s Anatomy of an Epidemic, and the DSM-5.

So NAMI gets $550,000 annually from pharma. It’s heartbreaking. A conflict of interest much like Moody’s/Lehman Bros or The JointCommission and the error-infection prone hospitals it accredits for Medicare payments. Does anyone nowadays know how Lyndon Johnson got lily-white hospitals in the south to accept Afro American Medicare patients? Through his HEW Secretary, he said in effect, accept Negroes or no Medicare dollars for your white Medicare patients. They folded immediately. This tool could be used in many ways to clean up the corruption described in your book and by Marcia Angell. Richard Rosenthal
